GPC / SEC Systems
GPC/SEC systems are used in various industries for research and quality control purposes. GPC/SEC works on the basis of size exclusion chromatography and is suitable for analyzing molecular properties. Some of the most common applications are related to polymers and proteins. You can contact us to purchase GPC/SEC systems from Malvern Panalytical. If you have any questions, our application specialists will be happy to assist you.

What is GPC/SEC?
What is Gel Permeation Chromatography?
Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) is an analytical technique that separates dissolved macromolecules by size based on their elution through columns filled with a porous gel packing. GPC is also known as Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). Figure 1 shows the measurement principle of GPC/SEC.
Why use GPC/SEC?
What can you use Gel Permeation Chromatography for?
By using GPC to measure molecular weight and other properties, researchers can characterize molecules such as synthetic polymers, as well as natural polymers such as polysaccharides. GPC can be used for multiple applications; with this technique,:
- Polymer chemists check polymer strength, toughness and quality
- Pharmaceutical manufacturers understand the behavior of medication
- Food producers better understand the quality and properties of products.
Multi-detection GPC/SEC, consisting of four detectors, is capable of measuring absolute molecular weight, molecular size and intrinsic viscosity. On this basis, macromolecular structure, conformation, aggregation and branching can also be calculated. The complete GPC workflow can be seen in Figure 2.
