Want to learn more about SEM?

What is SEM?

SEM stands for Scanning Electron Microscope. It's a powerful instrument used to observe the surface of materials at very high magnifications. Unlike optical microscopes, which use visible light, SEMs use a focused beam of electrons to generate images. This allows for much higher resolution and greater depth of field in imaging tiny structures, making it invaluable in fields like materials science, nanotechnology, and biology for examining surface details down to the nanometer scale.

Why use tabletop SEM?

Tabletop SEMs are compact yet powerful instruments renowned for their high-resolution imaging capabilities, reaching magnifications up to 100,000x. They excel in capturing detailed surface structures with clarity down to the nanometer scale, surpassing optical microscopes. Equipped with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), these SEMs enable precise elemental analysis of samples, crucial for understanding their chemical composition. Versatile across materials like metals, ceramics, polymers, and biological specimens, tabletop SEMs are user-friendly, making them accessible to researchers, technicians, and educators. Their cost-effectiveness and space-efficient design further enhance their appeal for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications.

What type of samples can you analyse?

With the NANOS tabletop SEM from Semplor, you can analyze a variety of samples, leveraging its advanced features for high-resolution imaging and elemental analysis. Here’s a short list of sample types you can analyze:

  1. Materials Science: Metals, ceramics, and polymers.
  2. Electronics: Semiconductors and circuit boards.
  3. Geological Samples: Minerals and rocks.
  4. Industrial Products: Coatings, composites, and other powders.
  5. Environmental Samples: Dust, soil, and particulate matter.
  6. Biological Samples: Cells, tissues, and microorganisms.

It's important to note that achieving optimal results often requires good sample preparation techniques. At Sysmex, we provide support and guidance to ensure your samples are prepared correctly for SEM analysis. Proper preparation can enhance the quality of imaging and analysis, allowing you to derive meaningful insights from your samples.
